The Project Timeline

From the Library Archives to the Concert Hall

Research and Editorial Components

February – May 2020

Ysaÿe’s arrangement of Chausson’s Poème is digitized by The Juilliard School. Preliminary performance copies were engraved and edited by Max Tan for a doctoral research project.

June 2020

Violinist Max Tan, organist Chris Chen, and pianist Jung-A Bang produce an informal recording of the Poème arrangement by Ysaÿe. Recorded in New York City during the pandemic, challenges with health and safety protocol as well as venue availability were overcome to capture an impression of the arrangement in live performance.

April – May 2021

As The Juilliard School Library opens up to visitors, Max Tan conducts a preliminary study of Ysaÿe’s arrangements of the Bach Violin Concerto No. 2 in E Major as well as the Vitali Chaconne.

August – October 2021

Max Tan works with composer Christian-Frédéric Bloquert to produce readable performance parts of the unpublished arrangements.

Planning Phase

January 2021

Max Tan awarded a grant from the Robert F. French Fund to produce the first ever recordings of these works.

March 2021

Violinist Max Tan and recording engineer Marlan Barry engage in initial discussions for a formal recording session of all three arrangements by Ysaÿe.
